A Case of Myasthenia Gravis with Thynnoma

Abstract
Recently we encountered a case of severe myasthenia gravis with a large thymoma which revealed pathologically malignant picture.
The patient was 47 year old man, whose toxic symptoms were aggravated due to thymoma. A total extirpation of thymoma was successfully performed. On the three days of operation, all toxic symptoms were abruptly disappeared.
Clinically we can divide the thymomas as benign and malignant, but the histological findings of thymoma reveal essentially no different between them. Even the thymomas show clinically malignancy they are usually seldom to metastatize to distant organ via blood or lymph stream, and the malignant thymomas are found commonly after 40 years old.
Since the first report of thymoma associated with myasthenia gravis by Weigert in 1901, many observers have found that the disease may be develop in about 25% of thymic tumors. Generally the symptoms of myasthenia seemed to be improve after excision of tumors.
